Wow!

Once again, Blake has written one of the best pieces of sci-fi i’ve ever read.   A literary wonder.   Totally un-put-down-able.

Not only is this a great story about the coming environmental apocalypse and the extinction event that will wipe Homo sapiens from the face of the Universe, this is also a great critique of Homo sapiens’ hubris and arrogance with regard to Nature.

Homo sapiens has got this seriously fucked up idea that it can control and rule Nature and that there’s no need to change the way we are because science will always find an answer to all our woes.

This is one of those books that i’ll be telling everyone i know to read — it’s that good — even though i know probably none of them will bother to read it because, hey, what do they need to know that they can’t watch on television or Youtube?

Anyway, i’m off back to Alastair Reynolds to finish off the last 7 of his books that i haven’t read already.

Recursion — Blake Crouch

The description on Amazon states that Recursion is the follow up to Dark Matter, which, for those of you living under a rock, is another absolutely, definitely, must read, Blake Crouch book.

So, i admit, i was a little dubious as to how this book would hold up when compared against its predecessor.   Dark Matter is, most certainly, a very, very hard act to follow.

But it did hold up, and without a doubt Recursion is very much a worthy book to be proclaimed as Dark Matter’s follow up.

Blake has one incredible imagination.   Genius.   How a writer can conjure up novels like Dark Matter and then follow it up with Recursion is outstanding.   Awesome mind-bending sci-fi that Blake somehow manages to make complete sense out of for all of us readers to enjoy having our minds bent by.

If you haven’t read these two books yet, then stop reading this and go and read them instead.

The Last Town — Blake Crouch

The Last Town -- Blake CrouchPines and Wayward were brilliant, and so i dove straight into this finale to the trilogy without pausing for air.

It’s been a while since i’ve been treated to such unputdownable books, and to have 3 of them in a trilogy is wonderful.

As with the other two books, great writing, great characters and great all-around story telling.

And what a great ending.   Although, for me, i feel it would have been a tiny bit slightly better without the Epilogue — it wouldn’t be a good review without some negative criticism, now would it?

I am most certainly going to be reading more from Blake in the future.

I’m now a fanboy.

Wayward — Blake Crouch

Wayward -- Blake CrouchPines was a really good read, and Wayward did not disappoint in any way either.

I found both books totally unputdownable, any spare moment i had i found my head glued to my Kindle, reading.

The story keeps on having more layers and twists added to it as more information from the time before suspension is revealed — all to be played out in the small town of Wayward Pines.   And the characters just get better the more we learn about them as Blake artfully drip feeds the occasional back story snippet from their previous lives.

Full-on story telling from a full-on story teller.

And now it’s straight into The Last Town for the finale.

Pines — Blake Crouch

Pines -- Blake CrouchI started to watch the TV series a couple of years ago, just because Juliette Lewis was in it.   And then they had the utter gall to kill her off in the third episode.   WTF!!!   So i binned watching the TV version and decided to read the books instead.

So how was the book?   Awesome!

I was very surprised to see this listed as “horror” at Amazon.   I would definitely put this in dystopian sci-fi, i didn’t notice any horror, just the normal dystopian sci-fi kind of stuff.

I’ve previously read Blake’s book, Dark Matter, which was exceptionally well written and Pines is just as good.   Blake does a fantastic job of putting his protagonists into some really mind-bending, disturbing situations and putting the reader well and truly into the protagonist’s mind.

All in all, a great start to this trilogy and i’m diving straight into book 2, Wayward, very optimistic for more of Blake’s style of writing — i’m becoming a big fan.

Dark Matter — Blake Crouch

Dark Matter -- Blake CrouchWow!   That was a total head trip and a half.

Admittedly, i’m not a subscriber to the multiverse theory, but that didn’t detract from the story at all.   I was just totally swept along at an amazing pace, i just didn’t want to stop reading.   Every spare moment i had for 2 days had my face glued to my Kindle screen reading this — and that’s quite rare for me as i normally only read at bedtime for an hour or so.   Very unputdownable!

Definitely a must read for anyone who likes good sci-fi: even if just a little bit.   You won’t be disappointed.

Well worth the 99p i got this for as a “Kindle Deal”.
