Mummy and George Go to the Park — Gaie Sebold

Mummy and George Go to the Park -- Gaie SeboldIn the anthology, Nice Day for a Picnic.

I only got this anthology for Gaie’s story, as i’m quite the fan boy.

An interesting short in that it just implies something rather than spoon feeding you it.   I believe the whole anthology is about strange picnics and if Gaie’s story is anything to go by i think i might just have a go at a few more of them when i feel like a quick read.

So the whole thing is just Mummy’s voice speaking to George as they go to the park for a picnic, which seems quite normal at first, but as Mummy keeps on speaking to George as they go through their park visit we begin to realise that things aren’t quite normal.

It’s certainly different, but really enjoyable.

A Change of Heart — Gaie Sebold

A Change of Heart -- Gaie SeboldIn the anthology, Wicked Women.

A quick trip to visit Babylon Steel, yeah, you remember her.

Sadly it’s just a short, but us Babylon Steel fans will take any words we can get from Gaie on this wonderful character.

This time Babylon takes on a necromancer, or two.

Super good, but just so wish Gaie would write a few more Babylon Steel novels.

A Blade to the Heart — Gaie Sebold

A Blade to the Heart -- Gaie SeboldAvailable in the anthology, Legends.

So far i’ve really enjoyed reading Gaie’s books but, sadly, i just feel this short fell a little short.

While i do think the redemption thing can be good fodder to build a story around, i just think in this case it’s all got a bit too rushed.   Probably would have been much better as a novella, at least.

But, ho hum, every favourite writer has to write at least one thing that just doesn’t work for the fangirl/fanboy reader: does anyone remember The Girl in Red?

Walls — Gaie Sebold

Walls -- Gaie SeboldAvailable to read in the anthology, X7.

Wow, that was a weird trip.   This short story starts really strangely, and gets even stranger, as our protagonist, Chrys, who suffers from agoraphobia and can’t go out, gets worse and worse to the point of having what seems to be a total psychotic melt down.

And then everything comes crashing down, and boom!   What an ending.

Ever more wonderful writing and story telling from Gaie, a master of the writing craft.   If you haven’t yet read any of Gaie’s writing then i really suggest you get started, it’s real good fantasy for grown ups who love real good fantasy.

A Hazardous Engagement — Gaie Sebold

A Hazardous Engagement -- Gaie SeboldI read Gaie’s first two books, Babylon Steel and Dangerous Gifts, quite a while ago now and thoroughly enjoyed them, so it was good to come back and enjoy some more of Gaie’s writing.

Other than the lack of brothels and sex (can’t have everything we like), this book is certainly just as enjoyable, well written, with great characters, and certainly a must read for anyone who has enjoyed Gaie’s earlier books.

Sparrow Falling — Gaie Sebold

Sparrow Falling -- Gaie SeboldWhile i rather enjoyed Shanghai Sparrow with it’s steampunk silliness and, also, the growth of Evvie, this book has immediately become unenjoyable with Evvie just turning into some kind of idiot who doesn’t want anyone else’s help or advice, even when she’s up to her neck in problems.   It’s really like the Evvie we left off with at the end of Shanghai Sparrow has been replaced with some utter idiot who learned absolutely nothing from her earlier experiences.

I do believe this is the first book of Gaie’s that not only have i not liked, but just couldn’t continue reading it was annoying me that much.   I gave it until 27% but it just kept on getting worse and i quit.   I’ve got too many good books to read to waste my time on stuff like this.

But as i’ve said about other writers whose works i’ve totally enjoyed, at some point each is going to write a book that i just don’t like.   This is that book for Gaie.

Ho hum!

Shanghai Sparrow — Gaie Sebold

Shanghai Sparrow -- Gaie SeboldThis began the final couple of Gaie’s books that i haven’t read.

Admittedly, i picked this up with a fair few preconceptions and had them all dashed rather quickly.   The first thing is that i’ve put Gaie’s writing firmly in the fantasy-for-grown-ups genre, and this is anything but that.

So i was rather surprised to find myself reading some steampunk with a hint of fantasy aimed at teenage girls (at least that where i think it belongs).   I was even more surprised to find myself quite enjoying it, being a 57 year old man.   It’s very similar to Magnificent Devices by Shelley Adina, so if you enjoy that kind of “silly” then i’m sure you’ll enjoy this kind of “silly”.

I’m certainly enjoying a bit of “silly” at the moment, so i’m diving straight into the second book in the series, Sparrow Falling for some more.
